Hair Loss Treatment from a Urologist.

No topicals. No compounds. Just the two medications that actually work, prescribed by a fellowship-trained urologist from Mayo Clinic and filled at the pharmacy of your choice.

Why We Do Not Compound

Most telehealth hair loss services combine minoxidil and finasteride into a single compounded topical or oral spray. mensRxplus does not do this, and the reason is clinical, not logistical.

When both drugs share one formulation, you cannot adjust one without changing the other. If finasteride causes a side effect, stopping it means stopping minoxidil at the same time.

Two separate generics filled at any US pharmacy cost most patients under $35 combined for a 90-day supply — under $12 a month total. Compounded combination products typically run $50 to $80 per month for something that is not FDA-approved.

Separate prescriptions. Lower cost. More control over what goes in your body.

The Two Medications We Prescribe

Finasteride — The Only FDA-Approved Option

Finasteride is the only oral medication with FDA approval for male pattern hair loss. It has been prescribed for this purpose since 1997. About 90% of men who take it stop losing hair. About 65% see measurable regrowth over 12 months. Effects take 3 to 6 months to become apparent and reverse within 6 to 12 months of stopping.

On side effects. A small number of men experience decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or changes in ejaculation on finasteride. These resolve in most men after stopping the medication.

There are rare reports of persistent sexual symptoms after stopping, sometimes called post-finasteride syndrome. This is uncommon. We take it seriously. Our protocol lets you start at a low dose, go slowly, and stay in control of the decision at every step.

We offer four dosing options so you can match the medication to your comfort level:

DoseScheduleBest forNotes
0.25 mg dailyEvery dayHigh concern about side effectsCut a 1 mg tablet into quarters. Imprecise but clinically reasonable at this dose range.
0.5 mg dailyEvery dayModerate concernGood tolerability data. Sensible starting point for most cautious patients.
1 mg dailyEvery dayStandard dosingThe FDA-approved dose. Most published efficacy data is at this level.
1 mg three times per weekMon, Wed, FriMaintenance or reducing exposureProduces meaningful DHT suppression. Useful after 12+ months of daily use.

Typical pharmacy cost: $10 to $15 for a 90-day supply of 1 mg generic finasteride at most major US pharmacies.

Oral Minoxidil — Simple, Inexpensive, Effective

Topical minoxidil has been available for decades. Low-dose oral minoxidil is a newer approach with strong and growing evidence. Many patients find it more effective than the topical version, with no scalp routine required.

We start you on oral minoxidil alone for the first 30 days before introducing finasteride. This gives us a clean window to assess each drug's tolerability independently and lets you adjust to one medication before adding a second.

Oral minoxidil is used off-label for hair loss at these doses. This is disclosed to every patient during intake. Side effects to be aware of: mild fluid retention, possible increase in body hair growth, and an expected shedding phase between weeks 4 and 8 that is not a sign the medication is failing.

Typical pharmacy cost: $10 to $20 for a 90-day supply.

One Visit. One Fee.

The hair loss new patient visit is $99 whether we prescribe one medication or both. There is no separate charge for adding oral minoxidil to your finasteride prescription. One visit covers everything.

Your medications are filled at the pharmacy of your choice. Most patients pay between $20 and $35 combined for a 90-day supply of both drugs at any major US pharmacy. GoodRx typically brings this lower.

Six-month check-in and refill visit: $39.

How It Works

  1. Complete the online intake form. Takes about 10 minutes. No video visit required.
  2. A urologist reviews your information and responds within one business day.
  3. If appropriate, prescriptions are sent electronically to the pharmacy of your choice.
  4. At 30 days, we follow up by text to check your minoxidil response before finasteride is added.
  5. At 6 weeks after starting finasteride, we check in on tolerability.
  6. At 6 months, a brief check-in is required to continue your prescriptions.

What About Supplements?

We do not sell supplements and receive no compensation for mentioning them. The table below exists because patients ask, and you deserve an honest answer. None of these have FDA approval for hair loss, and none replace finasteride or oral minoxidil.

IngredientEvidenceBottom line
Biotin (B7)Evidence limited to patients with documented biotin deficiency. Uncommon in men eating a normal diet.Low evidence for most men. Harmless.
Saw PalmettoMild DHT-blocking activity via 5-alpha reductase inhibition, same mechanism as finasteride but substantially weaker. Small studies show modest benefit in androgenetic alopecia.Weak evidence. Reasonable adjunct, not a replacement.
ZincZinc deficiency is associated with hair loss. Supplementation helps deficient patients. Limited benefit in men with normal levels.Worth checking. Supplement only if deficient.
IronDeficiency causes diffuse shedding (telogen effluvium). Men with diffuse loss should have ferritin checked before assuming the diagnosis is androgenetic alopecia.Check ferritin first.
Vitamin DReceptors present in hair follicles. Deficiency associated with hair loss in some studies. Deficiency is very common in Wisconsin.Reasonable to supplement broadly here.
Pumpkin Seed OilOne small RCT showed significant hair count improvement at 400 mg daily versus placebo over 24 weeks. One of the better-designed supplement studies in this area.Limited but legitimate data. Low risk.
Protein / CollagenHair is made of keratin. Adequate dietary protein is necessary for growth. Men in caloric restriction may shed for nutritional reasons unrelated to androgenetic alopecia.Eat enough protein. Collagen helps only if diet is poor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to take finasteride?

No. Oral minoxidil alone produces meaningful results for many patients. We will give you our clinical recommendation, but the decision is yours.

What if I am worried about finasteride side effects?

Our protocol starts as low as 0.25 mg daily, achieved by cutting a 1 mg tablet into quarters. You will not be pushed toward the standard dose if you are not comfortable with it.

What if I develop side effects after starting finasteride?

Text us. We may reduce your dose, change the schedule, or recommend stopping the medication. You will not be left without a response.

How long before I see results?

Most men notice stabilization of loss within 3 to 6 months. Visible regrowth, if it occurs, typically becomes apparent at 9 to 12 months. We manage expectations honestly from the first visit.

Do I need a video visit?

No. Most patients complete their entire evaluation through the online intake form. A video visit is available if needed, but it is not required and most patients never need one.
