What is BPH?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common issue for older men, where the prostate gland grows larger. It affects over half of men in their 50’s and up to 90% of those over 80.

The main signs are:

  • Trouble starting to pee
  • Weak urine stream
  • Peeing often
  • Feeling like your bladder isn’t empty
  • Waking up at night to pee

We’re not sure exactly why it happens, but it’s likely due to age and genetics.

The good news is that BPH can often be managed with medications that help relax the prostate and bladder muscles or boost blood flow, making it easier to pee. Starting treatment early can help you avoid surgery and keep your bladder healthy.

Wait, Cialis can be used for BPH? I thought it was only for ED.

Tadalafil (Cialis) is approved for BPH treatment when taken daily. Of course, it will also typically result in increased strength of erections. Many men who need treatment for their BPH are looking to avoid sexual side effects. Tadalafil typically provides an improvement in urinary symptoms similar to Flomax, and actually provides a sexual benefit! Daily tadalafil is ideal for men who have both BPH and ED.

Test your urinary flow rate at home with Emano Flow

Urologists use a device called uroflowmetry to measure urine flow rate and check for obstruction. Now, there’s a smartphone app called Emano Flow that does the same job using your phone’s microphone. This app is awesome! Benefits include:

  • Use it at home in your bathroom
  • Test multiple times
  • See visual graphs of your flow rate
  • Track improvements after starting medication

Emano Flow makes it easy to monitor your urinary health without visiting a doctor’s office.

mensRxplus recommended BPH Supplements

Saw Palmetto:

  • Derived from Serenoa repens tree fruit
  • May reduce prostate growth by affecting hormones
  • Mixed clinical results: some studies show effectiveness, others don’t
  • Popular natural option for mild to moderate BPH symptoms
  • Generally well-tolerated with few side effects

Pumpkin Seed:

  • Rich in phytosterols, which may help shrink the prostate
  • Studies show potential improvements in urinary flow and BPH symptoms
  • Less researched than conventional medications
  • Considered beneficial and well-tolerated for mild to moderate BPH
  • Often used as part of a broader BPH management plan

Both supplements are natural options for BPH, but effectiveness can vary. It’s important to consult a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. You need to have a face-to-face (video) consultation with a licensed medical provider and have a prescription to get medications from any pharmacy, including Cost Plus Drug Pharmacy. It’s the law. Also, a prescription ensures you are getting high quality generic medication from reputable US pharmacies.

Urinary symptoms much more commonly result from BPH than prostate cancer. However aggressive or advanced prostate cancer can also result in similar symptoms, and the incidence of both diseases increases as men age.  Screening for prostate cancer is typically done with a blood test called PSA and a digital (finger) rectal exam. If there are abnormalities with either of these then additional tests such as MRI imaging of the prostate may be considered and ultimately a biopsy is needed to determine if there’s prostate cancer.  Prostate cancer screening is typically done by your primary care provider starting at age 55 or possibly a younger age if there’s a strong family history of prostate or breast cancer. A mensRxplus provider may ask for your PSA result, but at this time can not order labs or perform a “digital” rectal exam ;).

Natural remedies and lifestyle alterations should always be considered before prescription medications. These will likely work best for men with very mild symptoms. Men with more moderate symptoms may need prescription medication, and combining prescription medication for BPH with natural remedies such as pumpkin seed oil or Saw Palmetto could result in a greater improvement in urinary health.
